Ill stop at chapter 3. This is because it takes simply too much time tp type. I took 1 and a half hour typing this and i won't type again until TEN PEOPLE thank this post, which means that this story mesmerized rakion.biz readers, which means that I should continue typing. Thank you for your support :D!!

MARS WONG gazed through the wall of glass at the cascading waterfall in the rock pool, fringed by a miniature rainforest. Colorful birds dived from the branches of tress and swooped down on the tropical shrubbery. Mars found it hard to believe that she was in the heart of the city- in the coffee shop of the elegant, five-star Hotel Grand. She fingered the strap of her pink camisole.

She turned her eyes to her boyfriend, Rafe Lim. His real name was Rafferty, but everyone called him Rafe. He was so handsome he looked like a member of a boy band. Rafe wore a white Hugo Boss shirt over slim-fitting jeans, and looked perfectly at home in this setting.

"You said we were going to have breakfast in the jungle," Mars said.

"And there it is," Rafe indicated the view from their table with a nod of his head.

At that moment, a peacock strutted past the window, ignoring the bustling scene in the coffee shop.

"Any complaints?" Rafe asked.

Mars touched his hand and shook her head. She dropped her gaze to the menu. The sight of all those alien names sent a flutter of panic through her chest.

Rafe came to her restue. "I recommend you try the eggs Benedict," he suggested, as though he had sensed her confusion. "And they have the best croissants in the world here. All their jams come from the Schwarzwald-the Black Forest. I guess that's because the hotel's general manager is German."

"Do they have porridge?"

"Only the oatmeal variety. With brown sugar and warm milk."

Milk....? Mars gave a little shudder. "I meant, my kind of porridge."

Rafe knew Mars better than she thought. He signaled a waiter with a snap of his fingers and ordered a bowl of rice porridge. "Do you think the kitchen can handle that?"

"For you, Mr Lim, everything is possible," the waiter assured him with a bow.

Stunned, Mars watched the retreating waiter, then leaned across the table. "They know your name, Rafe," she whispered in awe.

"Of course, I booked this table under my name."

Mars cast a glance at the tables crowded with businessmen. "But
how can he remember it?"

"That's his job," said Rafe with a grin. "That's what he's paid to do."

Mars sat back in her chair. Rafe never ceased to amaze her.
Sometimes she wondered whether she was sophisticated enough to be his girlfriend. It was a scary though, and one that often tormented her. What if he were to meet a girl who was really-what was that word?----chick? How would she compete?

The scream came from somewhere across the room. It rose to a frantic pitch, followed by a babble of voices. Diners leaped to their feet, their chairs toppling over behind them. The anxious waiters fanned out around the room, answering questions and offering reassurance.

"What's happening?" gasped Mars.

Rafe, too, was on his feet. "It sounded like it came from the kitchen."

Another scream, shorter this time, ending in a wail, reached their ears. It was followed by the sound of crashing crockery.

Rafe shot a quick glance at Mars." Wait here,"he said,"I'm going to see what's going on."

Mars chased after him. "Wait for me, Rafe!"

The restaurant was in an uproar. Rafe darted across the room, Mars on his heels. He reached the swing doors that led to the kitchen. From inside he heard sounds of chaos and alarm.

"Excuse me,sir, you can't come in here." A tall, heavyset man in the white tunic and black-and-white checkered trousers of a chef barred the way.

Rafe held up his card. "I'm an investigator. It sounds like trouble back there."

"Please return to your table, sir." said the chef gruffly. "The police have been called, and we have instructions not to let anyone disturb the crime scene."

Mars let out a gasp. "Crime scene? What happened? Was there a robbery?"

"I'm afraid it was more serious than that," growled the chef before he disappeared into the kitchen.

When he was gone, Rafe pushed through the doors, held them open for Mars, and then surveyed the scene of chaos. There was no sign of the tall chef.

A knot of kitchen staff was gathered at one end of the room. They were staring in horror at something on the floor.

Rafe and Mars followed their gaze. A moment later, their eyes were riveted on a pair of legs protruding from behind a stainless steel bench.

Mars squeezed Rafe's wrist.

"Has he been murdered?" she asked.

Chapter 2

RAFE edged across to a short, stocky man dressed in a chef's uniform. Like his companions, the man's gaze was fixed on the pair of legs.

"What happened?" Rafe asked quietly.

The chef shook his head, his attention held by the corpse. "Someone killed him."

"How?"

"They stabbed him." The chef sucked in his breath, then added in a whisper," With a knife."

Rafe pointed to the lifeless protruding legs. "Who was he?"

"Mong," the man said, barely glancing at Rafe. "Mong Tuck Seng. One of the bakers."

Masr tugged on the chef's sleeve. "Did anyone see his killer?"

"No."

Rafe frowned. "But the kitchen was so busy. How could a man be murdered without anyone seeing who did it?"

"He wasn't killed just now," the chef explained, raising a hand and pointing at a bank of stainless steel cabinets. "His body was in a cupboard. Elsie opened the door, and it just...dropped out."

"Elsie? Elsie who? Is she here now?" Mars wanted to know.

Before the man could answer, the tall chef returned through another door. He took one look at Rafe and Mars and waved a fist angrily.

"I thought I told you not to come in!" he thundered.

"It's OK, I know them," said the man who followed him into the kitchen.

"Good morning, Sergeant Soo," Rafe called.

The sergeant shot them a faint smile. "Hello, Rafe...Mars..." His expression darkened. "What are you doing here?"

"We were having breakfast when we heard some screams." Mars answered.

"I told them this was a crime scene," the tall chef began, but Sergeant Soo stepped past him to examine the body.

He rose to his feet a moment later and turned to the chef. "Please take down the names of everyone in this room, then ask them to wait outside."

"But what about the breakfasts?" demanded another chef in a foreign accent, which Rafe recognized as French. The swarthy man waved a handful of dockets. " I have three omelets for Table 19, two more for Table 32—"

"This kitchen is closed until further notice," Sergeant Soo said curtly. " A forensic team and the medical examiner willbe here shortly. No more cooking will be possible."

The tall chef's mouth sagged. "But that's impossible, Sergeant. I have a restaurant full of diners!"

"I understand, but that's the way it is," Sergeant Soo said with a shrug. "You'll have to use another kitchen. This one is closed until we've photographed the corpse and finished our work."

The tall chef hesitated for a moment, then clapped his hands. "You heard the sergeant. Everyone out! We'll have to use the kitchen in the Chinese restaurant."

"Sacre bleu!" wailed the French chef. "It is unthinkable! How can i create my famous French omelets in a Chinese kitchen?"

As the dazed kitchen staff trooped out, Sergeant Soo placed a hand on Rafe's shoulder."I'll have to ask you and Mars to leave too."

"I understand, Sergeant." Rafe grinned. "Alvin won't believe his ears when we tell him a baker was stabbed where we were having breakfast."

The sergeant grunted and gave him a rueful smile.

I'm sure I'll be hearing from him..."

RAFE paid their taxi fare, and he and Mars hurried across the car park to a familiar door. Beside it was a window that bore a big sign, designed by Mars on her computer. It announced :

SOH & CO INVESTIGATORS
We investigate anything, No case too big or too small

They opened the door and stepped into Alvin Soh's headaquarters, which, as everyone knows, is located behind his mother's jewelry shop. Once it had been the storeroom, but Gracie Soh had let her son take it over for his detective club. Now, the cramped, concrete-walled-space looks more of a police squadroom. Tan Wei Ling's collection of criminal records bulged in box files stacked on a shelf. Photographs of sinister criminals stared down from the wall behind her desk.

Azizul looked up from the fishing rod he was examining. As usual, he wore a hooey and his favorite baggy shorts, with a cap sitting back to front on his head. "Hey, how was your breakfast?" he called.

"You won't believe us," said Rafe smugly.

Alvin Soh was seated gloomily at the long table in the centure of the room. His gel-slicked hair was always cut very short at the sides, which seemed to make his ears stick out. And because his hair sprouted up from the top of his head, he looked a bit like a carrot.

He pushed aside the morning newspaper and greeted Rafe, who was his senior investigator and best friend."I've never seen such a boring start to a school holiday," he grumbled. "I hope your breakfast was more interesting."

"We were served up a murder," Mars said with a grin.

Alvin leaped up. "A murder?" He tugged at his pointed chin. "What are you talking about?"

Rafe pulled out a chair from the table and sat across from his friend. "It's true. Mars and I were at the Hotel Grand when we heard screams from the kitchen."

"Hey, that's a very expensive hotel," Azizul said in amazement. "You mean someone got themselves murdered there?"

"Not only murdered," said Mars, "but his body was stuffed in a cupboard in the kitchen."

"Whose body was stuffed in a cupboard?"drawled an Americian voice from the door.

Tony Hall strode in followed by Tan Wei Ling. Tony's hair was long, bleached by the sun, and he was wearing a surfing and board shorts, while Wei Ling wore glasses and her trademark white tee shirt and blue jeans. Mars could not help thinking how out of place Wei Ling would be the Hotel Grand.

"A baker at the Hotel Grand," Mars replied. "Mong Tuck Seng. He was murdered, and his body was hidden in a cupboard in the kitchen."

Alvin's face lit up. "That's fantastic." When Wei Ling scowled and Tony let out a laugh, Alvin corrected himself. "I mean, it wasn't fantastic for Mr Mong to get murdered, but the timing is great for us."

"Sergeant Soo arrived while we were there," Rafe reported. "He's investigating the case now."

"What else did you find out?" Alvin asked eagerly.

"That was all," replied Mars. "Except that the body was found by someone called Elsie."

Alvin reached for a pen and paper. "Elsie who?"

"That's all we could learn before Sergeant Soo cleared the kitchen," Rafe informed him. "I assume Elsie works there."

"Did you see the body?" Tony asked, much to Wei Ling's disgust.

"Just his legs," said Mars. "But we heard he was stabbed to death."

"Stabbed?" Azizul echoed. "That's a nice, quiet way to kill someone. Not like a noisy gunshot."

"Great thinking, Azizul," commented Alvin, making a note.

"Well, I don't think we should get involved," said Wei Ling stonily." Everhy holiday we have, we end up investigating another crime."

Tony ignored her. "Hey, Alvin," he drawled, " it sounds like case you could crack easily."

Wei Ling rolled her eyes. "You didn't ask me what I think."

"You've just told us what you think," Azizul sneered, twisting his cap acount on his head.

It was a habit Wei Ling detested. Sher had a beauty spot on one cheek. When she was upset, a little muscle beside it twitched and made it bob up and down, as it was doing right then.

"When are you going to call Sergeant Soo?" Tony asked Alvin.

Alvin met Tony's blue eyes and reached for his cell phone. "Now would be a good time, wouldn't it?"

"You two are impossible!" Wei Ling stomped across to her desk. "He won't let us anywhere near the case."

"There's no harm in asking," snorted Azizul, fiddling with his cap again, "Who knows? This might be our lucky day."

Alvin punched in the sergeant's number and switched to speakerphone function. The ringing tone reverberated around the room, followed by Sergeant Soo's gruff voice.

"Alvin, I haven't got time to talk," he snapped.

"Good morning, Sergeant," Alvin greeted him airily.

"No, I don't need any help right now," the sergeant grated.

"Well, can you just tell me one thing?" Alvin pressed on, hearing the sergeant's loud sigh over the speakerphone.

"What?"

"Have you found out what time the baker was stabbed?"

"Who said he was baker?" growled Sergeant Soo. '

But he was, wasn't he? Alvin checked his notes. "Mr Mong Tuck Seng. And Elsie found his body in a cupboard. So what time was he murdered?"

"Alvin, " the sergeant hissed into his phone," we haven't established the time of death yet. Now I can't talk--"
'
"But it must have been before the rest of the staff arrived?" Alvin ppromted.

"Why?"

"Because bakers always start work early, right? Making all the bread and stuff?"

Sergeant Soo grunted. "Is that so?"

"And what about the murder weapon?" Alvin questioned. "Have you found it? What kind of knife was it?"

"I can't tell you anything more."

"But you haven't told me anything,"Alvin complained.

"Excellent. Then let's leave it like that," and the sergeant cut the call.

"I told you, Alvin!" Wei Ling said with a laugh. "He doesn't you want you interfering in a murder!""

Alvin slipped his cell phone into his pocket, scoopyed up his notes, and got to his feet.

"Well, we can;t do anything here," he announched.

"So where are we going?" asked azizul.

"Where else?" Alvin said with a grin.. "The Hotel Grand."
